The Furtive Hunter

The Chinese Trumpet Fish (Aulostomus chinensis) is a demersal fish that can be found in the water column, from the surface to 120m deep. It’s a clever stealth hunter with two techniques to catch its prey. The first is the ambush, camouflaging its streamlined body with the lines of its surroundings, hovers over the prey unnoticed, and hunts the tiny orange animals through suction, sheltered around this old orange Sea Fan. The second is through discrete tracking, staying close to some big fishes or even turtles until it has the opportunity to approach prey unsuspectedly.
