In general, animals smaller than humans do not appreciate meeting us, and it's stressful for them. They perceive us as potential predators or rivals, causing them to flee or hide. Trying to disturb them as little as possible has become very important to me, so I make an effort to be aware of the animal's state—whether it's scared or curious—and react accordingly. I either leave it alone or spend some time with it. After all, if the animal hides or flees, I won't have a subject to photograph.

When the guides showed me this octopus, it was hiding in a hole. I retreated, giving it enough space to escape. It turned out to be one of the biggest octopuses I have had the pleasure to photograph, and we spent a couple of minutes together as it became more relaxed.
