Manta rays (Mobula alfredi) are known for their graceful and majestic presence in the ocean, and observing them feeding in a reef environment is a captivating experience. Manta rays are filter feeders; they consume small organisms from the water by filtering them through their wide mouths. Their diet primarily consists of plankton, small fish, and microscopic organisms. Plankton are attracted to the surface of the ocean by light from the sun, the moon, or artificial sources. The feeding at the surface pattern makes them vulnerable to collisions with boats and their propellers, which is why navigation velocity should be reduced in manta habitats. This manta appeared on a black night, following the plankton attracted by our diving lights. Observing reef mantas feeding is a mesmerizing experience and a reminder of their crucial roles in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems.
